- Louis Dutton believes in the future of Centerville and buys "The Record," the local newspaper. He finds Phyllis Darel employed as assistant editor, but, because of his dislike for the plan of employing women, he discharges her. Howard Folsam, proprietor of the local department store, is secretly infatuated with Phyllis, and when he hears of her discharge he calls on the new editor and threatens to withdraw his advertising support unless Dutton reinstates Phyllis. This makes Dutton furious, and he refuses Folsam's demands and orders him from the shop. Folsam, actuated by a desire for revenge, and also wishing to entangle Phyllis in his coils, backs her in starting a new publication in opposition to Dutton. The loss of Folsam's advertising endangers the prosperity of "The Record." Dutton is desperate. His establishment catches fire and he faces bankruptcy, but Phyllis comes to the rescue with charming forgiveness and they consolidate the two newspapers. Also their domestic affairs.
- After living in a boarding school for some years, Peggy Dean accepts the invitation of her Aunts Abigail and Salina to live with them. They warn her that she will be "on probation" because of the family's displeasure with Peggy's father for marrying an actress, so Peggy masquerades as an exceedingly prim and proper missionary. She must drop her disguise, however, to win James Landon. Disillusioned when he learns of her deceit, James leaves, but Peggy overtakes him in a racing car and brings about a reconciliation.
- A fortune hunter is the accepted suitor of the daughter of an apparently wealthy widow, but when she receives notice that the oil stocks, in which her late husband's fortune is invested, are worthless, he finds the young girl less attractive. The broker who has represented the widow calls to explain the situation and extend his sympathy. Accompanying him is a wealthy friend, who becomes quite interested in the girl, although he is twice her age. He later makes a formal proposal of marriage, believing that he can win her love through kindness. The girl for the sake of her mother accepts and they are married. Despite his great love for the girl he is unable to overcome the great difference in their ages, and enjoining the broker to secrecy, he buys the worthless oil stock so that she may be independent, and he then leaves her to go back to his oil fields. Learning of his sacrifice, the nobleness of it arouses the girl's love and she follows him to tell him of her awakening.

Eventually Clothilde appreciates that Zoe is fully able to cope on her own and returns to France.

When May seriously injures a patient, Yuki offers himself up as a sacrifice and May happily throws him to the wolves.
